چکیده

Background The clinical assessment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture risk is largely limited to quantification of maximum diameter over time to monitor growth. Recent studies have extended this paradigm to modeling biomechanical loading and wall stresses using computational hemodynamics or solid mechanics simulations, in efforts to reliably numerically predict aneurysm-specific wall motion. However, the numerical simulation of aneurysm wall motion is time and resource intensive, and inherently involves complex mathematical modeling of often unrealistic wall properties. In this study, we characterize AAA wall motion using shape-analysis to quantify detailed regional function by direct processing of 4D (3D + time) cine CMR data.

In vivo strain assessment of the abdominal aortic aneurysm.

The only criteria currently used to inform surgical decision for abdominal aortic aneurysms are maximum diameter (>5.5 cm) and rate of growth, even though several studies have identified the need for more specific indicators of risk. Patient-specific biomechanical variables likely to affect rupture risk would be a valuable addition to the science of understanding rupture risk and prove to be a ...

Reconstruction 4d of Blood Flow Mr Imaging on Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms with Thrombus Signal

Cine MRI (amplitude image and phase contrast image) has been used to represent the blood flow velocity on the aortic aneurysm. Acquisition of images taken perpendicular to the abdominal aorta is done in free breathing and breath hold at the specified location as needed. Active Contour method or Snake (Deformable Model) has been used to perform automatic contour on amplitude image to detect the ...

Blood flow and coherent vortices in the normal and aneurysmatic aortas: a fluid dynamical approach to intra-luminal thrombus formation

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are frequently characterized by the development of an intra-luminal thrombus (ILT), which is known to have multiple biochemical and biomechanical implications. Development of the ILT is not well understood, and shear-stress-triggered activation of platelets could be the first step in its evolution. Vortical structures (VSs) in the flow affect platelet dynamics,...

Can We Predict Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Progression and Rupture by Non-Invasive Imaging?—A Systematic Review

Introduction: The most commonly used predictor of aneurysm behavior in clinical decision-making is size. There are however small aneurysms that rupture and certain large aneurysms remain asymptomatic. There is growing evidence to suggest that other variables may provide better information on metabolic and physiological properties of aortic wall and therefore better predict aneurysm behavior. Me...

Impact of poroelasticity of intraluminal thrombus on wall stress of abdominal aortic aneurysms

BACKGROUND The predictions of stress fields in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) depend on constitutive descriptions of the aneurysm wall and the Intra-luminal Thrombus (ILT). ILT is a porous diluted structure (biphasic solid-fluid material) and its impact on AAA biomechanics is controversially discussed in the literature. Specifically, pressure measurements showed that the ILT cannot protect the...
